Walking away from someone you love: Choosing yourself and finding your worth

Recently, I made the decision to step away from someone I had deeply cared for for years and it broke my heart. The night I made that decision, I stayed awake for hours, crying until my eyes could barely stay open. A part of me wanted to take it all back. Another part of me knew that, as painful as it was, I had finally reached a place where I couldn't keep doing this to myself.

I didn't walk away to be cruel. I didn't walk away hoping he would chase me. I didn't walk away to teach him a lesson or make him realize what he had lost. I walked away because I had finally learned mine.

For a long time, I kept trying to find my place in this person's life. I kept questioning what I could do differently, what I could give, how I could prove that I was worth choosing.

And when this person repeatedly made me feel like I don't matter, eventually I started questioning myself.

Maybe I'm not enough.

Maybe I'm too much.

Maybe if I tried harder, he would see my value.

Maybe if I were more patient, more understanding, more loving, things would change.

I had those thoughts more times than I can count.

And suddenly it hit me that I shouldn't have to prove my worth to someone who has already decided not to see it.

Being treated as replaceable over and over again slowly changes the way you see yourself. You begin measuring your value by someone else's actions. You start wondering why somebody else was easier to be chosen than you.

And I don't want to live like that anymore. To be in a constant state of low self worth. Chasing what is not mine.

So I walked away. Even though my footsteps left bloody marks behind me. Even though every step hurt. Even though a part of me wanted to turn around.

Walking away doesn't mean I stopped caring. It doesn't mean I hate this person. It doesn't mean I wish him pain, loneliness, or regret.

Sometimes love means accepting that you cannot keep standing in a place that keeps hurting you.

This person will always have a place in my heart but he no longer has a place in my life.

And there is a difference.

I finally started loving myself enough to stop abandoning me.

Maybe that's what I was supposed to learn all along. That my worth isn't determined by who chooses me. That I don't have to compete for a place in someone's life. That I don't have to convince anyone to see my worth and understand my soul. To leave after the first sign of not caring.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is close a door that you desperately wished would open. I would rather heal than spend more time hurting myself trying to be enough for someone who made me feel replaceable.

This isn't goodbye with anger. It's goodbye with love for myself too. I'm finally in peace with reality. Not desperately trying to have what isn't mine.

If you're reading this while lying awake at night, wondering whether walking away makes you selfish, whether you're giving up too soon, or whether you can love someone and still choose to leave, I hope you choose not to abandon yourself any longer.
